The country was divided into slave-free(union) and slave(confederate) states. This led to a war between the two sides. The two sides were fighting for control of the country. The Confederates wanted slavery throughout the country. The Union wanted to outlaw slavery.
Gettysburg Address
After Lincoln refused to remove Union soldiers stationed at Fort Sumter Confederate soldiers began to fire at the fort on April 12th, 1861. They attacked all day and night, but no one was killed. This is how the war began.
General Lee Surrenders

On New Year's Day 1862 Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. This freed 3.5 million slaves in the Southern states. By the end of the war, over 4 million slaves were freed.
Lincoln's Assasination
When General Lee tried to invade Union Territory on July 1st the result was the bloodiest battles fought on U.S. soil. More than 50,000 people died as a result of the 3-day battle. On November 19th, 1863 gave his most famous speech, The Gettysburg Address.
After the loss of Georgia, the confederates were struggling greatly. Richmond fell to the Union Army. General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant on April 9th, 1865. However, it would take 16 more months for the war to end.
On April 14th, 1865 Lincoln was shot in Ford's theater in Washington DC. Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth in the back of the head. Lincoln died the next morning (April 15th, 1865). Only 6 days after General Lee surrendered.
