  • Before the New Imperialism in Africa, the continent was home to a diverse array of societies and cultures, with complex political and economic systems. Some African societies had developed advanced agricultural, while others were organized into powerful empires and kingdoms. Trade and commerce flourished across the continent, with goods and ideas flowing along extensive networks of trade routes.
  • 2. In the late 19th century, European powers began to compete for control of Africa, seeking to exploit its resources and establish colonies and protectorates. European powers used a variety of tactics to gain control of African territories, including military conquest, diplomacy, and economic domination.
  • 3. The Scramble for Africa intensified in the 1880s and 1890s, as European powers rushed to establish their claims to African territories. The Berlin Conference of 1884-1885 formalized the division of Africa among European powers, with little regard for the interests or rights of African peoples.
