Trade and commerce flourished across the continent, with goods and ideas flowing along extensive networks of trade routes.

European powers used a variety of tactics to gain control of African territories, including military conquest, diplomacy, and economic domination.
- 3. The Scramble for Africa intensified in the 1880s and 1890s, as European powers rushed to establish their claims to African territories. The Berlin Conference of 1884-1885 formalized the division of Africa among European powers, with little regard for the interests or rights of African peoples.
