- There was many types of craftsman in medieval times.
- -butchers-bakers-blacksmiths-carpenters-stonemasons-coopers-weavers-tanners
- Apprentices at the age of 12 would leave home, live with a master craftsman, sleep in their work-shop and receive no pay, doing the grunt work

- After 7 years of training, they became a journeyman.
- After this they applied to become a master craftsman. They had to create a masterpiece as a test. Graded by the guild. If accepted, he could set up his own workshop.
- Now paid for work and could travel to. different towns to gain experience.
- Craftsmen joined the guild for their profession. These were organisations for each trade which set standards, prices and wages. Guilds charged a fee for membership.

- Guild members offered care for old/sick guild members and for the families of dead members.
