  • The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe
  • Exposition
  • Rising Action
  • Sierra Eads
  • Climax
  • Fortunato had insulted Montresor in the past. Montresor still holds a grudge against him for that and is planning revenge. He encountered Fortunato, who is drunk, during a carnival and greets him with all the happiness he could muster. Using Fortunato's weak points, Montresor lures Fortunato to his home by saying that he has Amontillado, a rare wine.
  • Falling Action
  • Montresor leads Fortunato into the catacombs underneath his house. He tells Fortunato that the wine is very far down the tunnels. Montresor fakes being concerned by Fortunato's cough so that Fortunato will not think he will be harmed. Fortunato keeps pressing on to get the Amontillado.
  • Resolution
  • Once they reach a certain nook, Montresor digs through a pile of bones to find stone, mortar, and a trowel. Montresor falsely voices his concerns for Fortunato again. He takes Fortunato to a recess in the wall with bones all around it. Montresor then chains Fortunato to the wall and fetches the bricks.
  • Montresor starts laying the bricks down to block Fortunato in. After the first row was laid, Montresor discovered that Fortunato's intoxication was wearing off. When the fourth row was laid, Fortunato started struggling against the chains. Then, the seventh row was laid and he started screaming. Montresor hesitated, but then kept building.
  • Montresor finished the eleventh and final row of the bricks. In a sad voice, Fortunato started laughing and saying that it was a good joke and that they should get going. He then goes silent and Montresor calls his name while receiving no response. Montresor only hears the jingle of bells before he finished his work and reorganized the bones.
