- For 7 night's straight, the narrator stalked the old man while he slept.

- On the eighth night, the narrator suffocated the old man to death
- Police Department
- I'm on my way!
- The police show up to the house, as the neighbors heard a noise
- Is anyone home?
- The narrator finally gives in, and confesses to killing the old man
- dissemble no more! I admit the deed! --tear up the planks! here, here! --It is the beating of his hideous heart!
