Storyboard Text

  • The Crusades were started because a war-like people known as the Seljuk-Turks attacked the Byzantine empire. The Byzantines turned to the rest of Europe for help fighting agains them
  • Any who fight for the Byzantine empire shall go to Heaven!
  • Pope Urban II Answered the Byzantine's call for help. He rallied Europe, promising that anyone who fought in would get into heaven and promising good pay for the soldiers.
  • Pope Urban's promises worked well. Thousands of people joined the Crusade, both soldier and peasant alike.
  • For the Church!
  • The first Crusade was a massive success. The thousands of devoted soldiers won the war for the Byzantines and the Christian church.
  • The second Crusade was a huge defeat for the European armies. They lost Eddesa to the enemy and the armies they sent were swiftly defeated.
  • RETREAT!
  • A few decades after the end of the second Crusade, Sultan Saladin rallied Muslim peoples and took over the city of Jerusalem. The English King, Richard I, was battling towards the city. The two leaders eventually came to a truce, marking the end of the third Crusade
