- The novel begins with Santiago, a shepherd, having a recurring dream about finding treasure at the base of the Egyptian pyramids. This dream sets the course of his journey.
- The Oasis and Meeting Fatima
- Melchizedek, the King of Salem, runs into Santiago and urges him to follow his personal legend while also introducing him to the idea of the Soul of the World.
- The Desert's Lessons
- Santiago finds out the worth of following his heart and starts to appreciate the significance of personal legend while working in a crystal shop in Tangier.
- Discovering the Treasure
- When Santiago finally makes it to the oasis, he meets Fatima, the love of his life, and the Alchemist, who teaches him about the Language of the World.
- Santiago learns about the connectivity of all things and the value of following his heart on his trek through the desert.
- Santiago eventually goes to the Egyptian pyramids and discovers that the treasure he had been looking for all along was inside of him. His spiritual and personal journey has culminated at this point.
