Storyboard Text

  • Plot
  • Exposition
  • I really want to go to the dance, but my parents said that in Kazakhstan, we don't dance until we are 16...
  • Rising Action
  • I'm hoping you can understand...
  • Ok.
  • Nurzhan will have to stay at home for a few days.
  • The story My favourite Chaperone talks about a young Russian Girl, Maya, and her family who moved from Kazakhstan to the United States through a dating magazine. As their closest relative, Maya's aunt left them, they encountered many challenges such as language barriers, financial challenges (Maya's parents were teachers in Kazakhstan but now they're taxi drivers and cleaners), new religion, and loss of respect in public.
  • Climax
  • Nurzhan, I don't know...
  • After Maya and her family moved to America, she attended Beacon Junior High School. One day, she received a permission slip to the Spring Fling, the all-school dance, however, she knows that her parents won't let her go. She cares a lot about her family. Currently, she is working hard to become better at gymnastics and to make the school team.
  • Falling Action
  • I know right!!
  • This is fun!
  • Awesome!
  • Before long, Maya's brother Nuzhan gets into big trouble after getting into a fight with Ossie, a boy who constantly bullies Nurzhan because of his accent and the way he pronounces words. Maya had to give up her gymnastics meeting to translate for her father of what happened. However, she purposefully hid some facts during the translation to protect her brother from being punished severely by her father
  • Resolution
  • A few days later after the fight, Maya's father caught Daniel lifting her up and down like weights. He believes that he was treating her like a toy and was infuriated of what happened. Although the conflicts between the Alazova family are tense, Maya still longs to attend the Spring Fling. Even though she thinks that there is no chance of her going, Nurzhan offers to help her ask their parents. After all the hard work that she has helped out throughout the house, (helping her mother clean after she hurt her leg and babysitting her brother), surprisingly, her father signs the slip under the condition that Nurzhan can be Maya's Chaperone.
  • Don't worry! Leave it to me Maya!
  • Maya's mother gave her a gorgeous bracelet to wear to the Spring Fling. She goes to the dance with Daniel and says that she has to babysit Nurzhan. She dances with Daniel many times throughout the day. It was a unforgettable moment she ever experienced and was really enjoying it. Throughout this dance, Maya felt that all of her hard work for her and her family has finally paid off. She finally got to attend the dance and have the time of her life and supported her mother with her job.
  • Maya's story of her life in the United States is very similar to very ordinary immigrant families who recur the same problems; cultural differences, job insecurity, less social network, and lack of time to spend with their kids. Children taking responsibility for life prematurely. Thus, we should know that we must be grateful for what we have, cherish, care for, and dedicate to our family, and never give up on our goals.
