Storyboard Text

  • James is at a safari. He sees 3 giraffes. James wants to know how tall the giraffes are.
  • James want to find the height of the first giraffe. He knows that one of the giraffes is 31 feet away and the angle of elevation from him to the giraffe is 30.

  • James also knows that the second giraffe is 30 feet away and that the angle of elevation from him to the giraffe is 28.

  • 30
  • Using the trig function Tangent, James can find the height of both giraffes. The first giraffes height is 31 * tan(30) which equals 17.9. The second giraffes height is equivalent to the equation 30 * tan(28) which equals 16.
  • James knows the height of the final giraffe is 17 feet and that he is 40 feet away from the giraffe. James wants to know the angle of elevation from him to the giraffe is.

  • 17
  • To find the angle of elevation from James to the giraffe James needs to use inverse trig. To do this James puts tan-1(17/40) into his calculator. He gets 23 degrees back. he now knows that the angle of elevation from him to the giraffe is 23 degrees.
