  • TEN YEARS LATER......
  • The Ionian Revolt happend around 546 B.C when the Persians came to Ionian to take over the area.Once the Persians had conquerd the land the Ionian Greek revolted. Once they revolted the Athienian Greeks sent ships and soldiers to their aid.
  • Salamis
  • King Darius vows to get revenge on Athens becasue they had helped the Ionion Greeks when they were in need at the Ionian revolt.Darius sent 25,000 Persians in 490 B.C. to attack Athens. The Pesrian landed their ships at the north eastern side of Athens. The Athenians fought in their very powerful formation called the phalanxes and they only had 10,000 soliders fighting. The Persians army got destroyed by the Athenians because they were not prepared. The Persians wore light armor and they had a lack of training for land combat. That day the Persians lost 6,000 men while the Athenians only lost 200.
  • Ten years later after King Darius the Great his son Xerxes created a giant ivasion to take over Athens to get revenge for what his dad failed at. He did this because he knew how badly divided the Greeks were and many didn't care about fighting the Persians. Many of the other city-state wanteed to fight the Persians. The Greeks fought back and held them off for 3 days since they underestimated them.The Persians were only able to advance pass the greeks becasue they had a spy that then informed them about a secret passage around were they were fighting. The Spartan Greeks held off the Persians in fear of defeat to help other greeks retreat to saftey .
  • The Athenian leader Themistocles conviced the Athenians to evacuate Athens and fight at sea instead of on land. The Greeks had many stratergies that were successful. They went to a narrow channel called the Salamis that was located a few miles southwest of Athens. Xerxes then sent a big war ship to block both sides of the channel. The ships that Xerxes sent to the channel were really big and they had a hard time turning. The smaller Greek ships that were armed attack many of the Persians warship but hitting them leaving with holes in the side of their ships.
