Hi! This is my journey through the human digestive system, one of the most complicated of all systems.
The main purpose of the digestion and absorption process is to break down the nutrients into their smallest molecule and absorb them. This ensures that the food gets to the bloodstream where it is needed.
Lisa is hungry and decides to prepare a taco. It contains vegetables, beans, tortillas, and meat. All three macronutrients are included.
I am now bolus
This is the digestive system. It consists of 9 important organs that vary significantly in shape and size. These are: the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, gall bladder, small intestine, large intestine, and rectum.
As the taco enters the mouth, it comes in contact with saliva which the salivary glands produce. Saliva contains enzymes called Amylase, and these break down carbohydrates into Maltose.
Once in the mouth, there is mechanical digestion occurring - chewing. The process of chewing breaks the food into smaller pieces and with the help of saliva, the food turns into bolus (chewed food).
The food now called bolus is swallowed and enters the oesophagus. The nerves on the oesophageal tissue sense the food's presence and trigger peristalsis. Peristalsis is involuntary muscle contractions that move the food through the digestive system.
