Storyboard Text

  • One billion years ago, there was nothing but dry land. The dust, the rocks and the wind were the only thing that surrounded earth. But, it was believed that Earth's landscape at that time was covered with barren rocks harboring nothing more than some bacteria and possibly some algae
  • Then one day, a green cell appeared that are called Prokaryotes. The organisms classified as Bacteria and Archaea, and are the most successful & abundant organisms on Earth. In fact they have been THE dominant group on earth since life appeared and for around 2000 million years were the only life form on earth.
  • The first land plants appeared around 700 million years ago, during the Ordovician period, when life was diversifying rapidly.
  • An increase in land plant abundance may have occurred at the time just before the period known as the Cambrian Explosion, when the next Snowball Earth period failed to occur because temperatures did not get quite cold enough
  • The plants conceivably boosted oxygen levels in the atmosphere high enough for animals to develop skeletons, grow larger, and diversify
  • And from then, 'til now, the land plants continued to grow that also helped produced the first fossils of almost all major categories of animals living today.
