Ariel comes (invisible) and sends all of them to sleep except Antonio and Sebastian. Antonio tries to get Sebastion to betray his brother Alonso. He does so and trys to kill him and Gonzalo. Ariel then wakes them up before they could kill them in their sleep and they pretend they were trying to defend them, they believe it.
  • act 2 scene 2 Caliban (Prospero's slave) comes in and sees Trinculo approaching, which he thinks is a 'spirit meant to torment him' so he hides underneath his cloak. Trinculo sees this and says "What have we here? A man or a fish? Dead or alive? A fish. He smells like a fish, a very ancient and fish like smell, a kind of not-of-the-newest poor-john". He then hears a thunderstorm arriving and hides underneath the cloak with Caliban. Then Stephano comes along whilst singing a song making Trinculo say "Do not torment me. Oh!". Stephano hears this and says "What's the matter? Have we devils here?"
  • act 3 scene 1Whilst Ferdinand is working as Prospero's servant after he was split up from his father he sees Miranda and instantly falls in love as does Miranda. They talk whilst he is working and after a while Ferdinand proposes. • act 3 scene 2Caliban has drunkenly mistaken Stephano as a god. This leads Stephano (who is also drunk) to believe he has the right to take over the island. They plan to overthrow and kill Prospero. This however did not go to plan as when they were plotting Ariel was nearby, invisible to the drunk men. As Caliban tells them: 'As I told thee before, I am subject to a tyrant, a sorcerer that by his cunning hath cheated me of the island'. Ariel replies with 'lies'. As the Ariel is not visible it sounds as if Trinculo is saying these things. Stephano hits Trinculo in rage as every time Caliban talks Ariel says 'lies'. Soon after they make up and plan to make Stephano king of the island.

Ariel says to them " you are three men of sin, whom destiny, that hath to instrument this lower world, and what is isn't, the never-surfeited sea, hath caused to belch up you-and on this island.
