My Story
Storyboard Text
- Me and my mom immigrated to the United States for a better life when I was just 5 or 6 years old. My mom decided to move us here because my dad was here, and she wanted our immediate family to be together. My dad went to the United States when I was about 2 years old.
- When we moved to the United States, we got an apartment with my dad. We did not live in the best conditions because we had little money, but our family was finally together.
- Shortly after we moved here, however, my parents had marital issues which lead to a divorce. It was a difficult situation for me to witness as a child. I saw the many fights and arguments they had, and ultimately, the last fight that lead to the divorce.
- It was not easy for me and my mom after we moved out of our apartment due to the divorce, especially for my mom. To support us both, she took English lessons and learned to be a nail technician, upon others. Some days she worked overnight and I could not see her.

- Hey honey, I won't be home tonight. Can you sleep at the afterschool?
- Growing up after my parents divorced, it was just me and my mom. But we did fine with life on our own. She went to work to support us while I tried hard in school to get good grades.
- Even though I tried in school, there were some subjects I struggled with. My mom would get angry at me for not getting As, which made me feel like I could never live up to her standards. We got into many fights over this matter. Looking back, I know it was because she was concerned for my future. To her, we had no one else to depend on but ourselves.

- I tried, I just struggle with these subjects!
- We faced many hardships without my dad around, but we got through it all. It was not perfect, and there were many fights along the way, but my mom took care of us and I did my best to focus on school despite everything that happened.
- Now I am in college, and working toward my future. The divorce affected my life circumstances in many ways, but not all of them. I was still able to live out my life and do the things I wanted. Although it was more difficult for my mom and I to live without the support of a third person, I would say that I had it good overall and look forward to the future.
- I chose to tell this story using Storyboard That because I felt that it would help paint a more vivid picture of a significant event that has affected my life. When we hear about others' hardships or the stories they have been through, sometimes it is hard to imagine what it is like to be in their shoes, especially when we are in the opposite situation. I think using this medium helps the listener picture my story in a way that is more personal.
