  • What is the Haitian Revolution? Yes, it was a social and political upheaval but to be more specific Haitians ( slaves from the French colony of Santo Domingo ) revolted against their masters
  • The slaves revolted because they heard about the French Revolution and word got out that the King abolished slavery .The course of action/ plan of revolting was poorly constructedEven when Haitians were free there were still stigmas putting them below everyone who was whiteToussaint L'Ouverture made the mistake of trusting that the French would keep their deal
  • What inspired the slaves to revolt? What were the main mistakes
  • During the revolt slaves burned down plantations without thinking. In theory they thought if there were no more plantations they wouldn't have to be slaves. However, the economy was based on sugar and with no slaves to do all the labor everything would go downhill. Toussaint L'Ouverture had to force slaves to tend to the sugar because someone had to do the job. Then they were back at square one.
  • GOOD NEWS...kindaIn 1794 slavery was abolished but former slaves were at a huge disadvantage. They didn't have any money and most of them couldn't read and probably earned less than other working men. Even free people of color were seen as inferior to whites and there were still rules to show that white people had power. For example If a white person was in your presence you would have to stand and of course free people of color were still often subjected to legal discrimination okay so ..... BAD NEWS
  • Toussaint made the mistake of making a deal with the French. Toussaint said he would stop the revolt if the French abolished slavery. Even though the French took him up on his offer they later accused him of planning a revolt and jailed him in the French Alps. hent he died 10 months later
  • EVEN WORSE NEWS in 1799 Napoleon came to power and became the new French Emperor! In 1801 Napoleon said that just the thought of a black republic is disturbing and we would do anything to stop it from happening. So of course he brought back slavery.
  • WOO HOO FIRST BLACK COLONY TO BE AN INDEPENDENT NATION
  • ACTUALLY GOOD NEWS!After Toussaint died a Haitian man named Jean-Jacques Dessalines took over the revolution and in 1804 Haiti an independent nation
