- In this scene, Anoosh is imprisoned and executed. His death causes Marjane great pain and adds to her discomfort and hatred of the government and environment in Iran. If Anoosh had not been killed, Marjane would have had one more person to vent to. She may have gotten more advice and went through less hardship with another friendly face to help her during hard times.
- In this scene, Marjane is moving into the boarding school in Vienna. This event impacted Marjane by being the beginning of an era of her life. During this period, Marjane gained insight and influence from the west. Had she not lived in Austria, she might not have gained the ideas that she did from her friends there. She also would have gone through more struggles living in Iran during the war.
- College and stuff
- In this scene, Marjane is undergoing the cultural exam for entry into university. By entering university, Marjane was able to later get a visa to go to France when she felt sick of living in Iran. Had she not entered university, she would most likely have endured even more mental struggles.
- NAVIANCE
- In 2012, my grandmother died of Alzheimers. Due to her condition in the years prior to her passing, I barely knew her at all. Had she not died in the way that she did, I may have had a stronger connection to my family.
- In 2016, I moved to a new house. It was much larger to our previous house, which was very cramped. With more space to live in and my own room, I was able to feel more comfortable. If I didn't move houses I might have developed worse mental health. Marjane's move was to an area with a vastly different culture, far away from her family, while my own move was only a few miles away, and I was still near all of my friends. I didn't have to adapt nearly as much.
- Just recently, I also applied for college. While I am aware of my acceptance, I have no idea what will happen as a result of this. However, I do know that without this action, I would have exponentially fewer opportunities for the future.
