  • Of course! Hmmm...Let me start from when I was 16 years old.
  • Grandpa Ryan! Would you like to share some stories with us from when you were young?
  • One evening, I decided to go get groceries for my home, as my mother and father were working.
  • OUR COUNTRY NEEDS MEN LIKE YOU!
  • GROCERY STORE
  • Hmmmm...What is this? I think I should join.
  • When I reached the store, I saw a very unique poster hanging outside the store. It really intrigued me. The poster was about joining the army and all of a sudden I had this desire in me to sign up.
  • After about 2 months, I was standing in a single file line filled with soldiers, preparing to fight in the battle of Vimy Ridge.
  • Canadian General Arthur Currie was given orders in February 1917 to capture Vimy Ridge from the Germans. The actual battle did not begin until April of the same year, as General Currie wanted us to build a scale model of the battle area and train how to manoeuvre through it. He simply did not want to send his men blindly during a major battle.
  • The Battle of Vimy Ridge was won by Canadians in 1917 against the German. “They pushed forward and successfully took the ridge.” This win was a big deal to Canada as a whole since it led to winning a seat “as a separate nation” after the war.
