  • HI there everyone!!Do you know about the ancient Indus Valley Civilization?Well we will tell you all about it!
  • The Indus Valley Civilization is an ancient civilization developed in the northwest part of India about 4700years ago. It started and developed in the banks of River Indus
  • They produced more crops than they needed and this was called as a Surplus. People had more time to spend so people started doing other jobs such as pottery-making, Craftsmanship, etc.
  • The Indus Valley Civilization is also known as the Harrapan Civilization as it is the first Site to be discovered in 1921. Excavations were carried out at the site during this time. There are other cities such as Mohenjodaro, Sindh in Pakistan.
  • Excavations have revealed that the civilization extends over a very wide area. It covers parts of Punjab, Sindh, and in Pakistan.. It also covers Jammu and Kashmir, Harayana, Rajasthan, Gujurat, some parts of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.
  • There are various civilizations in the Indus Valley Civilization. They are: Chanhudaro, Kalibangan, Banawali, Lothal, Sotka Koh, Surkotada and Balakot. Some Recently discovered sites are Dolvaria, Rakhigari, and Ganiweriwala.
  • What sets the Indus Valley Civilization from other civilizations is their various features. They are: Town Planning, Citadel, Grid System, Drainage System, Economic Cultures (Agriculture and Animal Husbandry), Arts and Crafts (Bronze Figures, Ornaments, Bead Making, Seals, Terracotta, Raw Materials, and Other Crafts), Social Life (Class Differences and Trade and Contacts), Religious Practices and their Scripts
  • Around 1750 BCE the Harrapan Civilization began to decline. There are Various Causes suggested for this change. Their town planning has become less efficient at Mohenjo-Daro. It is suggested that the city of Mohenjo-Daro became weak under the pressure of population. The other suggestion of this decline is that the expansion of the neighboring desert increased the salinity of the soil and decreased the fertility of it. Others consider Floods as the main cause and excavations reveal that Mohenjo-Daro itself was Flooded more than once
