We become introduced to the main cast of character through a chess game(that the father losses)as well as the sergeant who will be coming to the family's home.
Falling Action
That's the worst of living so far out, of all the beastly, slushy, out-of-the-way places to live in, this is the worst. Pathway's a bog, and the road's a torrent. I don't know what people are thinking about. I suppose because only two houses in the road are let, they think it doesn't matter.
The sergeant arrives and sits at the fire, and then begins to tell them the tale of a 'monkeys paw'. The family ends up making a wish for 200 pounds, but the officer says that there will be consequences..
Resolution

Their son dies at work the next day, and their wish comes true, receiving 200 pounds for compensation.

After the wish, banging was heard on the door, Mrs. white rushed to the door, struggling to get it open, and Mr. White was horrified, knowing that whatever was out there, was NOT their son. Right before Mrs. White opened the door, Mr. White made a final wish, the door flung open, and nothing was there.
