  • Neha and John are scientist who came to Antarctica to research on adaptations of various plants and animals in the polar regions.
  • Oh my god!! It is so cold in Antarctica. I wonder how the plants and animals adapt to these weather conditions.
  • Yes Neha, It is extremely cold in Antarctica. Today we will research on how they survive in these cold conditions.
  • See that Polar Bear. It seems so relaxed and not bothered of the cold. How is it staying warm despite the cold weather?
  • Polar Bears have adapted to the cold weather by having special characteristics like white fur, a layer of fat under the skin, wide and large paws for swimming and walking, etc.
  • Wow!! That's amazing. But, how will the Polar Bear get its food in such harsh conditions? Wouldn't the bear starve?
  • To conserve their food and energy, Polar Bears hibernate for about 4-5 months a year. Their heart rate drops down from 46 to 27 beats per minute
  • What about penguins? Do they have the same adaptations like Polar Bears?
  • Correct Neha!! They have the same features like white skin that camouflages in the background etc. But they also have to swim, so they have webbed feet.
  • Won't the trees be affected by the continuous snowfall? They are also living beings.
  • Like all the animals in Antarctica, trees have also adapted to the harsh weather. The leaves are thin, strong needles. The needles have thick waxy covering layer. This prevents them from loosing too much water.
  • Amazing!! It seems that the plants and animals have adapted wonderfully to their surrounding.
  • Correct Neha. Surroundings and Circumstances teach everything. Living being have modified themselves physically and mentally to fit their surrounding for years.
