  • Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet gets rejected in England
  • Thomas goes to France instaed then meets Laurent Clerc and convinces him to come to Hartfort.
  • Students came from all over the place to learn sign language at the new school
  • The very first American sign language school was established in 1817 created by Thomas hopkins galladaut. Galladaut was a researcher who studied sign language right after he met his neighbors deaf child. He then traveled to England looking for new ways to study sign language but was later rejected because they wanted to keep their secrets.
  • Alexander Graham Bell convinced people to ban kids from signing.
  • NO MORE ASL!!!!!
  • Thoms hopkins then left England and went to France insteaad where they welcomed him. He then met Laurent clerc and thomas convinced him to come to Hartfort and then that is where they founded the very first American Sign Language school for deaf students.
  • They forced kids to stop signing by tying their hands behind their backs
  • Students then came from all over the place to attend the school even some from England to better undertand the langauge. They all signed the language differently but then the language spread and was mixed. Then that's how ASL was born.
  • A century later sign language was finally coming back
  • While the language was expanding throughout the U.S many students and teachers were encouraging more people to learn ASL, but many others strongly disliked the language, like Alexander Graham Bell. He convinced many schools to discourage sign language and forbid people from continuing to learn the language.
  • They forced the kids to speak and mimic mouth sounds/shapes by tying their hands behind their backs so they would stop signing. They spent hours trying to pronounce English words. People still used sign language to communicate to each other but was used surreptitiously.
  • Now that a century has passed sign language was finally coming out of the shadows. Deaf people started to become more politically involved and impowered. More schools were later on built in the U.S. Now people can learn and sign, sign language freely without being judge.
