Storyboard Text

  • In 1648 Charles I lost the English Civil War to Sir Oliver Cromwell and later on lost the battle of Preston also. Sir Oliver Cromwell was angry with King Charles and wanted him to serve justice!
  • On 20th January 1649, Charles I, was ordered a trial at the high court in Westminster Hall. He was to be tried by the 68 judges that turned up who decided if he was guilty or not.Charles I denied authority to the court and refused to enter his plead. Charles had many opportunities to save himself, but he denied them.
  • Charles made the mistake of telling his guards he had no remorse or regret for what he had done. And the guards told the court and gave them an idea and came up with another plan. The court continued on without the kings plead and witnesses where called so they could prove other crimes that Charles I committed.
  • On 28th January it was declared that Charles was sentenced to death for treason. He was to be beheaded, in front of the public.
  • On the day of Charles execution, he was allowed to go for a last walk in St James’s park with his pet dog. His last meal was bread and wine. And He and asked to wear thick underclothes under his shirt as he was very concernedthat if he shivered in the cold, the crowd might think that he was scared.
  • On Tuesday 30th January 1649, Charles was executed on a cold day. Charles executioner refused to do it, so a man and his assistant were found. They were paid £100 and wore masks so they were unidentified. He gave a speech and when he was beheaded a large groan went up throughout the crowd. Afterward Cromwell hoped for a better future for England
