  • LET US IN!
  • Since France was in a financial crisis, King Louis XVI calls a meeting of the Estates-General for the first time in 175 years. Each estate usually had one vote, but the third estate didn't like the vote by order idea because they knew the other two estates would always agree and veto reforms rather than agree with the third estate. The third estate instead wanted to vote by head, with how many reps were in each estate. The first and second estates didn't like that idea and locked them out of their meeting room.
  • The March on Versailles
  • In June 1789, after the third estate had been locked out of their meeting room they broke into a tennis court at the palace, the third estate declared themselves to be the National Assembly. They pledged to meet whenever circumstances might require until they have established a sound and just constitution. The Constitution was produced in 1791 which set up a limited monarchy in place of the absolute monarchy that had ruled France for centuries.
  • The Reign of Terror
  • On July 14, 1789, more than 800 Parisians assembled outside of the Bastille, a fortress used as a prison for political and other prisoners. The Parisians demanded weapons and gunpowder that were believed to be stored there. When they refused to open the gates, they stormed in and freed some prisoners but found no weapons. This was the start to a long revolution.

  • How can we help, Emperor
  • On October 5th, 6,000 women marched 13 miles to the Palace of Versailles and demanded bread. They also demanded the king and his family to return back to Paris to be more in touch with the people. He kept to his promise and agreed to move back to Paris. Later on, he tried to escape but was unsuccessful in this attempt.
  • WE NEED BREAD!
  • MOVE BACK TO PARIS! THE PEOPLE NEED YOU!
  • After King Louis XVI dies at the guillotine, everyone is looking for someone to take power. A man named Maximilien Robespierre quickly rose to leadership, which lead to The Reign of Terror. He believed France could have a "republic of virtue" only through the use of terror. Anyone who didn't agree with the ideas of the revolution or anything he said, they were brought to the Guillotine. It was a period of time in France where everyone was scared, and 17,000 were killed. On July 27, 1794, Robespierre was arrested, the next day he was executed.
  • I want the king back!
  • OFF WITH THEIR HEAD!
  • After the death of Robespierre, a military general rose to power. Napoleon Bonaparte had a ton of military success, and help take over Europe. A few years after he rose to power he named himself Emperor of France. Napoleon's most lasting reforms was a set of laws he wrote, called the Napoleonic Code. His goal was to take control of Europe and spread the ideas of the Napoleonic code. He was successful at first, but then made some mistakes that cost him his power. He failed at taking over Great Britain and Russia, which led to him getting exiled to Elba. After he escaped Elba, he rose to power in France once again. 100 days after he rose back to power, he was defeated at the battle of waterloo. He was exiled again to St, Helena, where he would die a few years later.
  • I shall control Europe and make it all mine.
