Gather around children, I'm about to tell you the story of how the First Battle of Bull Run started..
As i recall, it started around July 21, 1861 in Prince William County, Virginia, just north of the city of Manassas and about 30 miles west-southwest of Washington, D.C
The Union and the Confederates were at war with each other, General Ivrin McDowell lead the Union and General Pierre G.T. Beauregard led the Confederate army.
The First Manassas or Bull Run resulted in thousands of lives lost and is referred to as the first major land battle of the American Civil war.
The battle resulted in a win for the Confederate army followed by a disorganized retreat by the Union Army.
Its outcome sent northerners who had expected a quick, decisive victory reeling, and gave rejoicing southerners a false hope that they themselves could pull off a swift victory.
