There tribes under the oppression of the Aztecs who were glad to follow Cortés. Among said tribes were the Totonac and Tlaxcalan tribes. Not to mention all the other tribes that despised the Aztecs. Cortés knew that he could use their hatred to his advantage. Meanwhile, Cortés marched through the treacherous lands. He was suprised that Montezuma didn't send any armys to ambush him and his men. At last he arrived to the amazing Valley of Mexico.
Although Montezuma made a last effort to get Cortés to leave but sending him gold, Cortés moved forward. Soon Montezuma would meet Cortés on a causeway. He was carried in a litter, and was outfitted with many precious metals and gems. He walked on a cloth that was laid just for him. The Indiands bowed their heads in respect for their leader. Not long later Montezuma would go on to escort Cortés and him men to the city, as well as give him a palace to accomodate him and food to feed him. Dona Marina would help the two communicate, all the while Montezuma was convined that Cortés was a god.
It was not long before Cortés realised that he could control Montezuma. He ordered the emperor to come stay in the same building as him. When Cortés' soliers captured Montezuma, he was held captive and he became a 'puppet leader' for Cortés. He once got Montezuma to give him his entire storeroom of treasures. On the other hand, Valázquez sent ships and troops to seize Cortés. This expedition was controlled by a captain named Narváes. Valázquez irdered that Cortés be hanged for his disobedience. But Cortés was able to bribe the men to follow him, then attacked and captured Narváes. Cortés was able to take control of his army.
Capture Hernán Cortés and his men! He shall be hung for his misconduct!
