  • At The Start
  • Then...
  • I have no venom( dies )
  • I have venom ( has offspring )
  • Then...
  • I need to adapt so that I can eat those delicious Newts !!!
  • There was a population of rough-skinned newts living in the mountains of the Pacific North West. These newts have a ton of predators that are trying to eat them. But one newt was born with a mutation…
  • Then...
  • This mutation developed a venom called tetrodotoxin. This trait was desirable because it allowed newts to defend themselves against predators. This is an example of Natural Selection because since the trait was more desirable, it was passed down by generations because the ones with poison were more likey to survive then the ones without it.
  • Then...
  • Snake Population : 5k [ extremely resistant to poison ]
  • Over many generations, these newts inherited this tetrodotoxin and became a poisonous species. The snakes around them however still needed the newts to eat in order to survive. Because of this, these snakes began to adapt a way to become more resistant to the newt's poison.
  • Finally
  • We Evolve Together !!!
  • Due to mutations in the peripheral nerves that connect to the brain, the snake species was able to resist the newt's toxic poison. The same poison that is found in Pufferfish. Some snake species have a lot of resistance to this poison while others do not and that is because...
  • We have the same poison called tetrodotoxin !
  • Hotspots are areas where there is a large newt and snake population. When this occurs both species need to be ready to fight to survive. Snakes need to eat newts in order to survive since newts are a large part of their food supply and newts need to be poisonous in order to stay alive and not get eaten by the snake.  This is what creates hotspots that have extremely poisonous newts and very resistant snakes.
  • Newt Population : 5k [ extremely poisonous  ]
  • Coevolution is when species evolve together. Snakes and Newts have evolved together because the more poisonous the newts get, the more resistant the snakes become. The poisonous trait that the newts possess gets stronger every time the snakes are able to resist, and every time the toxins increase the snakes become more capable of resiting the poison.
