- Bus Driver: It looks like we're in the bad part of town. Let's hope we don't run into any trouble!
- Ah! A semi-elliptical archway that we must go through to reach our stop! The bus must be able to fit through it without going into the other lane.
- It looks like it is 20 ft high and 50 ft wide. The bus is 14 ft tall and 10 ft wide.
- Well, the a of this elliptical equation is 25 because the width of the archway is 50 (major axis/ 2).
- The b is 20, since the height is 20, and the other half of the ellipse is technically underground.
- BANDITS! I HAVE TO HURRY WITH MY EQUATION!!!
- (x^2/25^2) + (y^2/20^2) = 1
- 0.65 is less than 1, so the bus can fit through! Let's go before the bandit gets us!
- Well my x has to be 10 since the bus is 10 ft wide, and my y has to be 14 since it's 14 ft high.
- That makes the equation (10^2/25^2) + (14^2/20^2) = 1. However, the first part of the equation ends up equalling 0.65.
- Well folks, thanks for letting me be your bus driver today. I hope you enjoyed the ride!
