  • RIGHTS OF MAN:
  • Reign of Terror
  • Thousands of women rioted over the rising price of bread with knives and axes. The National Assembly took action to provide bread.
  • Execution of Louis XV| and Marie Antionette
  • The Declaration says "men are born and remain free and equal in rights." The rights were specified as the rights of liberty, private property, the inviolability of the person, and resistance to oppression.
  • Rise of Napoleon
  • Radicals took control of the Revolutionary government and arrested/ executed anyone who might not be loyal to the revolution. Around 40,00- people were killed and 200,000 were arrested.
  • Fall of Napoleon
  • Louis XV| and his wife were found guilty of treason and were put to death by the guillotine. Marie was put to death 9 months after Louis.
  • Napoleon successfully defended the National Convention from royalists, and won a series of remarkable victories. When the Directory lost control of political situation and confidence from French people, Napoleon came to seize power.
  • On April 12, 1814, Napoleon was forced to give up his throne. He was banished into exile on Elba. The battle of Waterloo forced him to abdicate for the second time and ended the Napoleonic Era.
