  • Constantinople is the most popular and fortified city!
  • Constantine decided to build a new capital. Byzantium was soon upgraded and renamed Constantinople. This city would then thrive to become the byzantine capital and stand for a very long time.
  • The western side of the empire had weakened. They were having trouble fending of invaders. Germanic groups were progressing towards them. Until the event that marks the fall happened. A Germanic leader outside the roman emperor ending Rome and its empire.

  • Constantinople was built along major trade routes benefiting the towns strength even more. Products from far places ended up at Constantinople

  • Justinian was the greatest byzantine emperor. He started ruling in 527. The family he was born into was poor. Justinian also created a set of laws called Justinians code.

  • Byzantine scholars kept work of the ancient Greeks. When Byzantine civilization was at its peak it blended Roman, Greek and Christian influences. When the Roman empire was in decline the scholars took the ancient manuscripts to Italy.
  • Justinian's code is a set of laws created by emperor justinian. It was one of the most long lasting sets of laws too. Justinian's code also became the basis for most legal systems in europe.

  • Byzantines practiced Christianity in a different way than western Europeans did. They were considered two different branches of Christianity. These two branches began to pull apart over time. Byzantines thought that the Pope shouldn't have the authority to banish the Emperor, leading to the Great Schism

  • Around the early 1200's western christians took control of Constantinople for 50 years, Until Byzantines regained the capital. In 1453 Turks gathered around Constantinople and destroyed it.

  • From 900 to mid 100's the Byzantines had one last period of amazement. Their trade increased and brought people from as far as Russia! Their government grew in power as well. It was the best period of Byzantine history since Justinian had started to rule.
