  • In medieval England, during the year of 1212, the ruler was King John and many believed he was the WORST king in history. He comitted many unlawful acts in such as starving his opponents to death, killing his nephew and INCLUDING inprisoning his formal wife.
  • HAHAHAHAHAHA!
  • He also abused his power by imposing heavy taxes on his barons so he could pay for his expensive foreign wars. They were punished severely or had their property taken away if they refused to pay.
  • If you cannot pay, then you must pay with your property
  • Have mercy!
  • The king was disobeying the law and the barons demanded that he complied. When he refused, the rebels–led by baron Robert FitzWalter, John’s longtime adversary–captured London and forced King John to negotiate
  • WE'VE HAD ENOUGH!
  • Ok...
  • At Runnymede (located beside the River Thames, now in the county of Surrey), on June 15, 1215, King John accepted the terms included in a document and it limited his powers.
  • You are not above the law, and you must RESPECT it!
  • Magna Carta> No aid to be levied without the permission of the Grand Council> No freeman shall be arrested, or detained in prison, or deprived of his free hold, or outlawed, or banished, or in any way molested; and we [the barons] will not set forth against him, nor send against him, unless by the lawful judgement of his peers and by the law of the land
  • THIS IS NOT THE ACTUAL MAGNA CARTA
