Storyboard Text

  • Whatever may occur, do what you conceive to be your duty
  • *Whispers* Druse
  • "One sunny afternoon in the autumn by the side of the road laid a soldier." That sentence lets me know what the setting is in the short story. The setting is the time, place, weather, and the condition. With that I knew the weather and where the soldier is at.
  • Is it then so terrible to kill an enemy in war?
  • Theme is the central message or "moral of the story". The theme in this story is that you should accept a person for who they are. In the beginning Druse's dad wanted him to go and do his duty. But towards the end Druse was shocked that the horseman was his dad.
  • Dialogue is what the characters say and why it is important. When the horseman kept chanting Carter's dad's name and saying," Whatever may occur, do what you conceive to be your duty." Was important because Carter's dad said the same thing before Carter left. And it made Carter stay calm after that because it made him realize it might be his dad.
  • Irony is what appears to be radically from what actually is. In the story it showed Situational Irony because I thought Carter was going to shoot the horseman as he aimed his rifle at it. But instead he said," Is it then so terrible to kill an enemy in war?" It confused me because he didn't do what I thought he was going to.
  • External means it takes place with a group, person and person, and outside element. This story is external because Carter kept hesitating to shoot and kill the horseman because they are enemies. It was the army versus the horsemen.
  • Emotions is how the character feels and the way they express themselves. In the story when it said," The officer was overcome by his intensity of his emotions, his legs failed him and he fell." That lets me know he was scared of what he saw in the sky and didn't know how to react.
