- Cattle Became Whalesby Austin ClarkCattle Became Whales is an Okinawan folktale based on a group of water buffalos who became whales after a tsunami struck a Japanese town. I personally think that the story is about if you have many possessions, the bigger the loss you will have. By this I mean for example, if you have a huge mansion and a cyclone hits and then if your house is destroyed your loss will be bigger as opposed to having a small house with few posessions.

- Wait, I can just get eight water buffalos to speed up the process!
- Cattle Became Whales
- I am going to get my fields done before all of my neighbours.
- In the southern Japanese island of Hateruma, it was rainy season so farmers would get their water buffalos and get them to walk around their rice fields to soften the ground.
- AAAHHH!
- But then one day, a smart individual suddenly came up with the idea of getting eight water buffalos to speed up the process of softening his fields.
- MOOOO!
- So in a rainstorm he got all of his water buffalos trotting over the fields, eager to finish before his neighbours.
- Since he was so carried away with getting his fields softened, he didn't realise that a tsunami was coming. All the other farmers got to high ground in time only having to bring one water buffalo, but the farmer could not do anything about it because he had to save eight water buffalos.
- The water buffalos got washed out into the ocean and then turned into whales. The farmer drowned from the tsunami because of his foolish decision. Legends say that the whales can still be heard today during rainy season, still trying to find their way home.
