  • This story takes place during the 1800s in France and introduces the main character who is named Mathilde. She is unhappy because she can't afford a good dress like most girls.Quote: "She dressed plainly because she could not dress well, but she was unhappy as if she had really fallen from a higher station."

  • The conflict of the story is that Mathilde and her husband get invited to the palace for a party-like gathering by Madame Georges Ramponneau, but Mathilde has nothing nice to wear to the gathering, so she doesn't want to go.Quote: "Two great tears ran slowly from the corners of her eyes toward the corners of her mouth. And what do you wish me to put on my back?”
  • Falling Action
  • Mathilde's Husband gave her money to buy a dress and she got a necklace from Madame Forestier, one of her rich friends. Then at the ball she had a good time and got lots of attention from peopleQuote: "The night of the ball arrived. Madame Loisel was a great success. She was prettier than any other woman present, elegant, graceful, smiling and wild with joy. All the men looked at her, asked her name, sought to be introduced."

  • After Mathilde and her husband left the ball Mathilde went to look in the mirror and was shocked to realize she lost Madame Forestier's necklace! She had to find it and return it to her.Quote: " She removed her wraps before the glass so as to see herself once more in all her glory. But suddenly she uttered a cry. She no longer had the necklace around her neck!
  • Mathilde told her friend that she was having the necklace mended and they spent the time replacing it and when they gave her the replacement they worked off the money that they owed by moving into a garret under the roof and working extra hard until they paid off the debtQuote: " They dismissed their servant; they changed their lodgings; they rented a garret under the roof. She came to know what heavy housework meant."
  • Mathilde saw Madame Forestier on a Sunday and admitted to everything about the necklace and the replacement and the working to pay off the debt. But she came to figure out that the necklace was only worth 500 francs.Quote: " Madame Forestier, deeply moved, took her hands. “Oh, my poor Mathilde! Why, my necklace was paste! It was worth at most only five hundred francs!”
