  • Since you didn't obey my wishes, you and your family shall forever be CURSED!!!

  • Why does the Sun have to shine ALL THE TIME?!

  • Elya Yelnats (Stanley's great-great grandfather) made a deal with a gypsy. However, he didn't obey her wishes, so she cursed his family forever. This is an example of Man vs. Supernatural because Elya did not obey Ms. Zeroni's (the gypsy's) wishes.
  • Man vs. Self
  • Should I give it to him?
  • Stanley is told to dig one hole a day out in the hot, dry desert where the sun shines all day. This is an example of Man vs. Nature because the sun is making Stanley hot and tired.

  • I declare you guilty!!!
  • Mr. Sir doesn't give Stanley any water since he was accused of stealing his sunflower seeds. This is an example of a Man vs. Man conflict because Mr. Sir is mad at Stanley.

  • Why won't you take my cookie?! You're obviously better than everyone!
  • While digging one day, Stanley finds a gold tube lying in his pile of dirt. He planned on giving it to the Warden in exchange for a day off. But X-Ray tries to convince Stanley to give it to him since he never had a day off. This is an example of a Man vs. Self conflict because Stanley can't decide what to do.
  • You really should, Stanley. I never had a day off.
  • Stanley is accused of stealing Sweet Feet's (Clyde Livingston's) shoes, which he donated to charity. This is an example of Man vs. Society because the society does not believe his story.
  • He stole from charity!! Who would do such a thing?!
  • They fell from the sky! I'm telling the truth!
  • Very guilty!
  • Since Stanley made a deal with Zero, his group says and thinks he's "better than everyone else". Zig-Zag tries to force Stanley to take his cookie because he thinks Stanley is better than him. This is an example of Man vs. Man because Zig-Zag is trying to force Stanley to do something.
