  • The Boston Tea Party was an act of protest that occurred on December 16th, 1773. It happened at Griffin's Wharf in Boston, Massachusetts by American colonists who were angry at the Britain parliament for imposing the tea tax. Colonists preached the phrase "no taxation without representation" throughout the American Revolution.
  • The Tea Act passed in 1773 in order to grant a monopoly on all the tea exported to the colonies, take control over all the trades, and bail out the British East India Company from debt. Smuggling was an issue and the tea act prevented merchants from getting tea from illegal markets.
  • Protesting and resistance was seen by American colonists frequently. Citizens rebelled by raiding ships, boycotting tea, and had cheering crowds to support the protest.
  • The Sons of Liberty held meetings to plan and execute the act of sneaking onto British ships disguised as Mohawk Indians to protest against "taxation without representation" by dumping 342 chests of tea into the harbor.
  • The Boston Tea Party resulted in the Intolerable Acts of 1774 passing as well as the Boston Harbor being closed off until all the tea was paid off. British government and King George were infuriated with this outcome and sent British troops to Boston.
