  • Kia ora my name is stewart I am here today to sign of the Treaty of Waitangi.
  • The Treaty of Waitangi is a treaty first signed on 6 February 1840 by Captain William Hobson as consul for the British Crown and Māori chiefs from the North Island of New Zealand.
  • Māori give 'kawanatanga' to the British. This word in English means 'governance'. The Māori who agreed to sign did so because they wanted the British to govern, which means to make laws about behaviour.
  • we promise that the maori can carry on living in New zealand and carry on as a Maori, we give the right to the govern to have the crown, and to represent New Zealand.
  • so we are here today to sign it off, so can the 40 chiefs please come and sign the treaty by the end of the year, about 500 other Maori, including 13 women, had put their names or moko to the document; all but 39 signed the Maori text.
  • we have done signing it off.
