Storyboard Text

  • Mendel loved to tend the garden. Until one day...
  • Think about it! If a heterozygous plant (the opposite of homozygous) self pollinates the genotype options are TT, Tt, Tt, and tt. Since the tall gene is dominant, the ratio is 3:1.
  • We get it!
  • Hmm.. I noticed that my pea plants had different characteristics. Some had tall stems, others were short and the rest had a different colors of flowers and pea pods.
  • From sprouts to full grown flowers.
  • I know that plants could self-pollinate. If the pollen of the stamen of a tall stem plant was transferred to the pistil of a tall stem plant, its offspring would have a tall stem. So same goes with short stem plant....
  • He continued to experiment on the cross-pollination of his pea plants. He chose pea plants that had a pure short stem and a tall stem. He expected that the offspring would have an average height. But it turned out that all of the offspring had a tall stem. With this observation, he called the tall short stem a dominant trait and the trait that did not not show was called a recessive trait.

  • Thanks for experiencing my experiments and discoveries on genetics! As I like to say, let's get sciency! Keep experimenting and making discoveries of your own!
  • See you next time!
