  • Haiti is an island in the Pacific. During the 1700's, there were 4 major groups of people: the enslaved, poor whites, rich blacks, and the rich, white, land owners
  • While these people lived in harsh conditions, France profited off of their work. This caused the people in Haiti to become mad at the treatment of the system
  • The people of the colony rose up under the leadership of Toussaint Louverture, a freed slave.
  • The French soldiers and the some of the Haitian citizens fought, however the French were unfamiliar with the land and its dangers.
  • In 1804, the people of Haiti finally won becoming the first ever successful slave revolution of modern times.
  • Even after the success of the revolution and having Louverture as leader, the people of island still lived in harsh conditions.
