  • They colonized Haiti for their sugar and profess of mercantilism, mercantillism is relationship between the colonizers and the colony. France would buy the raw sugar, and process it in the factory, they would sell the processed sugar for higher price.
  • The enslaved rebellion
  • Social group, African enslaved. European colonists, and affranchis( free people of mixed African and European descents or blacks). There was approximatly about 500,000 enslaved people, and 32,000 European colonists. The European colonists discriminated against the affranchis , but one thing they hoped to achieve was independence. Enslaved people faced way worse problems, they worked for a long time, some died to injuries, and infections, and tropical diseasse

  • TITLE II: Of The Inhabitants Article 3 — There cannot exist slaves in this territory; servitude (enslavery) has been forever abolished (ended). All men are born, live and die free and French.TITLE VI: Of Culture and Commerce Article 16- Each cultivator (farmer) and each worker is a member of the family and is entitled to a share in the revenues (profits)
  • He was part of the enslaved Africans or descendents, but he was a free black person, As a child, he learned to read and write French and Haitian patois and enjoyed access to books and schooling. His father taught him the use of traditional medicine. Before becoming a coachman for his master, Toussaint herded livestock.
  • End of slavery in Haiti
  • The enslaved people were inspired to rebel becauase of the french revolution, they had enough of everything they did to them. But Toussaint was hessitant of joining enslaved people finally took revenge on the white people, burnt everything, destroyed everything
  • Toussaint wrote a letter showing that he wants freedom, and that he was the correct person to follow. He made a deal with the spaniards. He got guns for his army, if the spaniards sided with Haiti they were thinking they can get the land
  • THe constitution of 1801 stated that Haiti did not want any slaves in thier territory. Slavery shall forever be abolished , all men born, live and die free in french. This was said in title 2 "Inhabits". In title 6 Toussaint wants the all the people and family member to work on the fields even when they just abolished slavery. I feel like this was a very controversy article.
