  • "She narrowed her eyes and shivered. Lucille shivered. We all turned and looked around for Gatsby. It was testimony to the romantic speculation he inspired that there were whispers about him from those who had found little that it was necessary to whisper about in this world" (Fitzgerald 44). It's important because he knows that other people talk badly about him and makeup rumors and only use him for his wealth.
  • "Who is Gatsby anyhow?" demanded Tom suddenly. "Some big bootlegger?" "I didn't hear it. I imagined it. A lot of these newly rich people are just big bootleggers, you know" (Fitzgerald 107). It's important because Tom is calling him a bootlegger because he has new money and Tom doesn't trust people with new money.
  • "I can tell you right now," she answered. "He owned some drug-stores, a lot of drug-stores. He built them up himself" (Fitzgerald 108). It's important because she still sees him as her love and still sees something in him. She still respects him and recognizes his wealth and works.
