- The French started capturing US ships because French felt betrayed when the US said they would stay neutral, but sided with the Great Britain.
- John Adams sent 3 diplomats to negotiate with French to end the attacks. French sent 3 unknown spies, X,Y,Z. French said they would only end the attacks if they were given a lot of money. Americans Refused.
- John Adams built up the US navy and started a half war in the sea against the french. They captured over 80 French vessels.
