Hi there humans. My name is Agou, the Agouti. I want to welcome you to my people's home, the Amazon Rainforest.
If you don't already know, my home is responsible for absorbing 2.2 billion tons of carbon a year.
This is done through the carbon cycle.
The carbon cycle essentially recycles carbon through an environment. Photosynthesis is able to use atmospheric CO2 to produce food.
As carbon is absorbed, and others release it through respiration, the importance of plants is emphasized so that it can offset the carbon levels and release oxygen.
If photosynthesis did not occur, this is what my home could become. However, this is not too far off from reality.
Human's have destroyed so much of my home through deforestation and agriculture. It is my people's job to help repopulate the forest with trees.
My home used to look like this everywhere...
But now it looks like this. There are a lot less trees and a lot of my friends are gone.
Thank god the Jaguars and Ocelots are gone though. They like to eat my people.
My friends and I call ourselves Keystone Species. We help repopulate the forest by spreading around Brazil Nut Tree seeds.
In the future, we can go from this....
To this!!!
However, human developments and actions have prevented us from moving forward.
Cattle ranching has led to greater greenhouse gasses, soil erosion, and depletes the land of nutrients.
As a result, I have less friends now.
Cutting down the tree's has really affected the Earth's ability to mitigate greenhouse gasses. There is less biodiversity as well.
However, many humans are our friends. People have been pushing for new laws to limit use of the amazon and reduce deforestation.
