- The book mostly takes place in the town of Swat in Pakistan. There are times when the setting moves because Malala and her family take refuge in Afghanistan and Malala is taken to a hospital in England toward the end of the book.
- Social Issue
- The main conflict occurs when Malala's town is infiltrated with the Taliban and they begin to instill their strict laws prohibiting girls from attending school.
- Symbols
- The book's theme says that even when a situation feels hopeless or unchangeable, when a person knows what is right - then they should fight for it because it is worth fighting for.
- The main social issue involves the support and right of girls to be treated as "equal" when it comes to being educated and having access to education.
