  • Hey! My name is Mary Jackson, I was born and raised in Virginia, Hampton in 1921. My first job was being a math teacher.
  • In 1951 I started working at *NACA, unfortunately it was segregated at the time. Later on the person who I worked for, Kazimierz Czarnecki suggested that I apply to a training program for engineers.
  • *National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics
  • Sadly, the training program was segregated so I had to get special permission to go there.
  • After that I became the first Black female to work at NASA. I worked as a aerospace engineer for about 20 years.
  • In 1979 I left engineering and took a demotion to be a manager for the women's program at NASA.
  • I wasn't that well known, but after I died in 2005, I got a lot of recognition and inspired lots of young women in the Stem career. Margot Lee Shetterly even wrote a book, The Hidden Figures that was partly inspired by me!
