Storyboard Text

  • Hi class! Today we're going to be learning about karyotype.
  • Yay, that sounds cool!
  • A karyotype is a picture of someone's actual chromosomes.
  • What are they used for?
  • A karyotype shows doctors abnormalities in people's chromosomes, allowing them to diagnose genetic diseases.
  • What do chromosomes look like?
  • On the board is a simplified picture of a chromosome. The images that doctors see is more detailed but this gives you an idea.
  • Some abnormalities that can occur are missing, damaged, or additional chromosomes. Since we've studied some genetic disorders, take a look at the karyotypes on your table and try to identify the disorder
  • Oooh I think I know it!
  • Yea that's right! You can see at pair 21 that there is an extra chromosome, the distinguishing factor of Down Syndrome.
  • I think the karyotype shows someone with Down Syndrome.
