Storyboard Text

  • During much of the 18th century, a huge social gap was present in the French Monarchy. Different ranks in society means that the royalty was present with the most riches and power in the society. The first and second estates also had quite a lot of power and money but the lower ranks (who made over 97% of the pop.) had almost no money and power.
  • The Third Estate was made up of the Bourgeoisie and peasants. They had very little money, no land, and no power and paid a heavy tax. They made up 97% of the population. In June 17-20th, the Natiinal Assembly was formed at a tennis court. They also swore in the famous Tennis court oath and the influence of the French Revolution started from thi point forward,
  • 1788 was a very bad year. In July, a hailstrom destroyed all crops in France, followed by a dry period, then one of the coldest winters and finally the massive floods that destroyed the crops. The price of bread also increased even more and with the taxes remaining the same, poeple went into debt and starved. They had enogh and soeventually,, they started to stand up against monarchy and the ancien regime in France.
  • Eventually, as the bread price continued to rise and poeple got into more debt, they were heavily tortured. Money was also just being used for war and the monarchy which made situations even worse. Whe they found out that higher estates were hoarding bread, they became extremely angry that most of the population had to suffer the intense weather and scarcity of food while rich people hoards bread. They thought it was very unfair (which it was)
  • On 5th October 1788, a massive riot against the king took place outside King Louis XVI's palace. There were a main protagonist called the Poissardes who were muscular fish ladies with great experience in knife working. They rioted after the great rise of the price of bread. There were some other poeple other than the Poissardes who rioted against the king. Eventually, the rioters managed to break into the castle, behead some guards and people and put them on spikes and just as the Queen Marie Antoinette escaped from her room, the rioters entered and tore her bed into pieces as she ended up in Louis's quarters.
  • This led to two main things: the firts thing that happened was that the Royal Family was demanded to move to Paris so they could consent with the poeple living in poor conditions and meet the fair demands of the suffering population. The second thing that happened was that King Louis has to sign a declaration of human rights to allow the third estate to have more power and authority with how they lived and how the country was managed. This event eventually led to the initial phase of the French Revolution to destroy the monarchy and introduce democracy.
