  • On January 26, 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip found good land in Australia so the British claimed the land and established a penal colony. The British colonized Australia because it reduced the overcrowding of prisoners in Britain prisons and to grow the British Empire.

  • There is also not just one but many types of climates in Australia; varying from tropical and grassland climates to hot summers and mild winters. Although Australia has several different climates, the continent is mostly dry. Australia's population mostly lives near the coast. Why? Well most of Australia is an abundantly dry area with climates that are unfittable for human settlement so that's why most people live near the coast.

  • One of the most known geographical feature of Australia is the Great Barrier Reef, also known as the world's largest reef in the world! There are many plateaus including deserts like the Great Victoria. On the east side of the plateau, the low land there emerges to the Great Diving Range, an extent of mountains on the east coast of Australia! Just like how unique Australia's geographical features are, so are the animals and plants! Because of the varying climates in Australia, it's home for many different animals and plants. Those include emus, kangaroos, and dingoes. The different climates also support plant life like in the rainforests, there are laurels and in the desert climates, there are desert shrubs and cactuses.
  • There are many languages the people in Australia speak like Chinese and Arabic but the official language is English. Unlike other english-speaking countries, Australians have an accent when speaking English varying from the person identities and background. There are different religions in Australia like Buddhists and Muslims but the most common religion is Christian where 70% Australians are Christians. A special holiday in Australia is Australia Day which is on January 26 and this holiday is to honor Australia and celebrate when the first fleet of British ships arrived at Australia.

  • Before colonization of Australia, the aboriginal people had their own distinctive culture, had many different beliefs and practices, and had tons of groups and tribes each being unique. The Aboriginal population drastically decreased because they were fighting against British to protect their land or from the diseases that spread over to them from Europe. The British didn't value or care about the Aboriginal cultures and just thought they either would disappear or change to living like Europeans.
