Storyboard Text

  • The plague began in China between the 1320s and 1330s. Traders brought it westward along the Silk Road. It infected Europeans as a result of the Mongol siege.
  • The Mongols used 'germ warfare', defeating the Genoese by catapulting the bodies of plague-infected soldiers over city walls. Genoan traders brought the plague with them.
  • The French, unaware of the danger, allowed the ships to berth at the Marseilles. Ove the next 4 years, the plague spread inland throughout most towns, cities and villages of western Europe.
  • The Tartars died as soon as the signs of the disease appeared on their bodies. They ordered corpses to be placed in catapults and lobbed into the city.
  • The rotting corpses tainted the air and poisoned the water supply.
  • This continued through the bitter events of 1346-1348 AD. Almost all of the East had been affected and among those who escaped, were a few sailors with the poisonous disease.
