- Instead of writing an essay for Mr. Wards class, Wesley Boone decides to write a poem on the Harlem Renaissance instead. He shared his poem with the class, which inspired others to share their own poems, which created Open Mike Fridays.You were a pied-piper, brother man with your poetry as your flute. Its my honor and pleasure to salute you, a true Renaissance man of Harlem
- Since the students started sharing their poems with each other, the all started learning more about one another. It also brings them to a realization that even though they may look different on the outside, they share different hopes/dreams on the inside with others in the class.
- "Mr. Ward gets a real poet, Pedro Pietri, to come to their class, and the kids got an article written about them and the open mike Friday poetry readings in the newspaper. The reporter called them an inspiration. Does anyone here know what I mean? You share your dream and right away people laugh. Joy is not a crime, though people make it seem so."
- Tyrone and the other students in Mr. Wards class to think more about their future after lives after high school. The open mike sessions seemed to give them some hope for their future and also helped them find an understanding between them. You've got to root it out, laugh last, push past, pursue. It's only on closer examination I learn that no two pieces are alike.
- At an assembly, the kids read some of their poems to the rest of the school. Open mikes were such a success that Mr. Ward decides to do it next year as well as a poetry slam. A poem can turn the clock back, help you crack the code of you. Just step up, step up to the mic and let your truth fly, loud, proud, raw.
