- The Civil War began on April 12, 1861. Confederate troops fired on Fort Sumter in South Carolina's Charleston Harbor.
- Keep firing until they surrender! The Union must surrender the fort!
- The two sides in the American Civil War were the Union and the Confederacy
- The Union war strategy was called the Anaconda Plan. The Confederate strategy was to fight a defensive war until the Union gave up.
